In June, ODS culminated a companywide program that combined two of our favorite things: positive changes in our employees' health and in our community. During the 2011 ODS Charity Challenge, we encouraged our employees to volunteer, raise money, and above all, get moving. All told, ODS employees raised $11,352.25 for the ODS Charity Challenge nonprofits: American Cancer Society, Hands on Greater Portland, March of Dimes and the Oregon Humane Society.
As part of the ODS Charity Challenge, which ran from April 27 to June 8, we asked employees to wear pedometers to track their steps each day. Over six weeks, the 258 employees who participated in the challenge walked 152,158,797 steps — that's equivalent to more than 76,000 miles!
ODS employees organized a total of 63 on-site fundraisers. In addition, they participated in four major community events: the Comcast/Hands on Greater Portland Cares Day; the March of Dimes' March for Babies; the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk; and the Oregon Humane Society's Doggie Dash. Our volunteers cleaned up neighborhoods and parks, raised money to fight prematurity, contributed donations to fund breast cancer research, worked to end petlessness and much more. Besides making a difference in our community, these events also gave ODS employees a chance to boost their own health by being more physically active.
The ODS Charity Challenge is a collaboration between ODS Personal Best, our workplace wellness program, and the ODS Volunteer Program.
