Those of us who come to work every day at ODS have a saying: “Don’t judge a company by what it says in its advertising; judge it by the way it behaves in its community.”
Apparently the Association of Fundraising Professionals is pretty impressed with the way we behave in our community. It just gave ODS its award as Corporate Philanthropist of the Year.
More than 800 people gathered at the awards luncheon at the Portland Hilton for the ceremony at which board chairman Jay Lamb accepted on behalf of ODS. While he was honored to represent the directors and management team of ODS, Lamb said, he was there to accept on behalf of every single employee of ODS who works day in and day out to serve people throughout the community.
Highlights of the company’s keynote philanthropic programs during 2010 included partnerships with Oregon Health Sciences University, Mercy Corps, the American Diabetes Association and Cycle Oregon.
Said Jonathan Nicholas, the ODS vice president who oversees the company’s philanthropic efforts, “We were greatly honored by this award. We like to think it recognizes our approach to corporate giving. Philanthropy is not about giving money to people who will paint your logo up on their wall. It’s about forging partnerships that can build through time. It’s about identifying people who are determined to innovate, then working with them to effect change. And it’s about providing for people throughout our company opportunities to do what they do best – help others.”
